As part of Katherine Mitchell DiRico’s solo exhibition i’ll believe in anything for a while, this event features the artist together with educator Taneka Scott in a live, in-person performance. The event is open to visitors to observe as a work of art within the exhibition.
string figures (cat’s cradle) follows a common thread in DiRico’s work: to provide opportunities for the viewer to reflect on their shifting location in time and space. This piece considers the dynamic ways we experience trust, in relationships, in society, and in virtual and material systems. string figures (cat’s cradle) explores this through the concept of the “loop” as an example of repetitive and often invisible systems that we negotiate in our everyday lives.
Using a physical loop of string, the two performers will play “cats cradle,” meticulously passing the loop back and forth while volunteer narrators read aloud passages from the 1905 published text String Figures and How to Make Them. Performing in the center of the gallery, the performers’ actions reiterate the endless looping of the digital media and audio experienced in the exhibition.

Katherine Mitchell DiRico uses drawing, sculpture, light, and sound elements to create multimedia installations that investigate how we negotiate connectivity and sense perception in today’s networked world. She was awarded the Montague Travel Grant and the President’s Research Grant from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the 2018 Walter Feldman Fellowship from the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston.
Taneka Scott is an educator and mother. She has worked in childcare and education for her entire life, receiving a B.S. in Human Services with a minor in Education from Springfield College; as well as a Montessori diploma from The Association Montessori International. For the past seven years, Taneka has worked as a guide/teacher at Melrose Montessori School where she first met artist Katherine Mitchell DiRico.
