On view in the recent solo exhibition Roberto Lugo / Orange and Black at the Princeton University Art Museum, which featured works that draw on the decorative motifs of ancient Greek vases, this panoramic scene depicts Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball in the modern era, as he helped the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series. Also depicted is Freedom National Bank in Harlem, where Robinson was the first chairman of its board of directors, a poignant example of his decades-long struggle for Black America’s economic progress and independence.
